Mongoose Pro Wing Comp Dual Suspension Mountain Bike Review

I bought 2004 model (same but red/white color). It was on clearance at Amazon for $229.00 total. I used it on the bike lane beside my house with the kids. With the gas sky rocketing I decided to carpool, so started to bike 1 1/2 each way to the subway station to meet my ride and lock my bike with heavy duty cable. There are about 50 to 100 bikes chained to serires of posts. The bike was great. Shifts were smooth, the dual suspension makes you feel that you are riding on air. After couple month my bike was stolen. From all the bike, some were better than mine with less thicker cable, the ..... choose my bike. I was dsapointed, espacially I was enjoying the ride and the smootheness of the bike. Now I'm using my old bike which no one will take even if I left it unlocked. I bought a new Master Lock Street Cuff and a very thick chain (both with warranties to replace the bike if the lock was broken).
Now, I'm waiting for my birthday in August and hoping the bike will go on sale till then.
I strongly recommend the bike. I will buy one in august.

Assembly of the Bike: This bike comes mostly assembled. Minor assembly is required before the bike can be used.
Amazon.com Bicycle Buying Guide Finding the Right BikeTo really enjoy cycling, it's important to find a bicycle that works for you. Here are some things to keep in mind when you're in the market for a new bike:
The Right Ride In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories:
Road and Racing Bikes--As a general rule, road and racing are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain.
Mountain Bikes--With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike--even one that you use regularly on trails--adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine.
Comfort/Cruiser Bikes--For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.

The Right Price A bike's price boils down to three essentials: frame materials, bike weight, and component quality and durability.
Entry-level--You'll find a wide range of comfort and cruiser bikes in this category, as well as some lower-end mountain bikes and road bikes. Most will have steel frames and components that are designed to last for several years with frequent use.
Mid-range--Bikes in this range may feature a lighter aluminum frame with mid-range components that keep performing after miles of use. If you're looking for a quality bike that is relatively lightweight and will stand up to abuse, this is the "sweet spot." Most serious commuter and touring bikes fall into this category, as do mid-range mountain bikes with a decent front suspension.
High-end--Racers and serious enthusiasts who expect lightweight, high-performance components will want to stick to this category. For road bikes, exotic frame materials (carbon fiber, titanium) and ultra-lightweight components can add thousands to the price tag. Mountain bikes in this class often feature advanced front and rear suspension technology, as well as components designed to handle lots of rugged trail action.

The Right Size Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:
Stand-over Height--To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.
Top Tube Length--You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike's posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit.
Bikes for Women--Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women's bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.

The Right Accessories When you make a bike purchase, don't forget these crucial add-ons:
Helmet (this is a must!)
Seat pack
Lock
Hydration pack, or water bottles and bottle cages
Spare tubes
Portable bike pump
Gloves

Just got the bike and it looks ok. BUT the Seat, Seat post and Peddles are missing.
I'm not going threw the hassle of returning the thing, that was probably there plan all
along anyway. I will just put a cheap seat on it and I have spare peddles. It is a shame
that you can't get things complete anymore. You do get what you pay for with this bike.
Just not all of it.

Huffy® Rival 26" Mountain Bike Review

Huffy® Rival 26 Mountain Bike

the bike came pretty fast and intact in the box. Looks exactly like the picture. When my boyfriend went to assemble the bike the brakes were completely misaligned on the front and back. It took a while and a lot of tedious adjustments to get the brakes on correctly. Also, the manual that came with the bike was the wrong manual. Handle bars were also very difficult to assemble. A lot of hassle if you plan to assemble it yourself and have only some knowledge of bike assembly.

Pacific Exploit Front Suspension Girl's/Women's Bike Review

Pacific Exploit Front Suspension Girl's/Women's Bike
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The price is good; but, and these are big BUTS!
Let me preface this by saying, I have ridden for many years with a bike club. I have also been a bike mechanic and have worked on all sorts of bikes from high end carbon fiber road bikes, to aluminum frame, chrome-moly, and good old fashion steel bikes.
I have put together many off the rack production bikes. This one by far is the worst.
DESIGN FLAW:
The geometry of the bike is such that the crank arms and pedals place are only 3 inches from the front tire. This 3 inches is WITHOUT your feet in position. For a normal 12 year old child, and I measured this, their shoe front is JUST 1/2 INCH AWAY FROM THE FRONT TIRE!!! This has disaster written all over it. I mean what child can ride in perfect foot position. The only fix for this is toe clip cage. Most 12 year old children can't ride with toe clip cages, or will not use them.
CRAFTSMANSHIP:
Each of the rims for the tires were wavy. The deviation was slight greater 1/4 from center. Steel rims are difficult to true. Even on a truing stand, you can't remove the blip. The problem is from the manufacturer. Also the decals were ripped and applied with bubbles and wiped off with a dirty greasy rag. The paint job had many dings and scratches from either manufacturing, packaging or shipping. I would think the two aforementioned.
The brakes on this bike are a joke. Linear pull brakes are cheap form of braking. Shimano has a version called the V brake. The problem lies in this: Cheap or poorly-specified linear pull brakes can suffer sudden catastrophic failure when the noodle end pulls through the metal stirrup. This will leave you with NO braking whatsoever!
Compared to side caliper brakes, these are very poor in function and design.
The components are poorly made. They are not not quality known manufacturers like Shimano, Campy, or SRAM.
CONCLUSION:
I am going to see what the company is willing to do. The problem this is a present for my child. She is in love with it. I can fix almost everything on this but the design flaw. I can only place the toe clip cages on there for her if in insists on keeping it.
Thus far, Pacific has not impressed me...nor other reviewers in this category. Looking at other models from them in this genre, 24" girl's bikes, they just don't seem to understand the market.
If I can't get satisfaction, I am probably going to look at HUFFY. For the most part, their off the rack bikes are okay.

Delta Post Porter Rack Review

Delta Post Porter Rack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you need to buy a seat-post type rack because you have a suspension-type bicycle, this rack works well for bicycle commuting. If you have a traditional "hardtail" bicycle, I would stick to a traditional rack. Previous reviewers reported two problems and I road-tested this rack against their comments.
(1) First problem reported by another reviewer was the rack not staying in place. I didn't have this problem at all. Remember to tighten the screws alternately a little at a time (top right, then bottom left, then top left, then bottom right). Tighten screws alternately and repeat several times until all screws are tight, and your rack shouldn't slide. (Don't tighten one screw all the way then go on to the next; alternate each a little at a time so the tension is even.)
(2) Second problem reported by another reviewer was the loaded bike bags bumped into the spokes and caused damage. I tested the bags at both the 25-pound limit and the 40-pound limit. If you turn sharply, get up speed, or go over a bump, the loaded bags can definitely bump into your spokes. You wouldn't want to fully load the bags for cross-country or sport riding. I just use my bike to commute to work, so I tested it by stopping on the way home to get groceries. At 25-pounds (bread, milk, canned food), there is no real problem, but at 40-pounds (one bag of cat litter loaded on each side), the right-hand bag did tend to bump my spokes if I got up any speed. So if you fully load your bags, go very slow & easy. Try the hard-sided "grocery getter" bags from Sunlite brand.

I bought this from bike USA through Amazon. So far I found the service of Bike Usa good, I received the item quickly. It ends there.
Never buy this bike, it will not last an hour. The rear gear mechanism broke and fell off within an hour. The bike is such bad quality, pay bit more and get a better one, you will not regret. I have called Bike USA since and they promised to ship replacement parts.

Service at Amazon was excellent! Many of the problems that were described in previous posts made sense to me becasue I had the same issue. However, it was not until I read the instruction manual and realized that I improperly assembled the fork( shock) backwards on the bike which led to poor braking and the wheel ultra close to my legs. Since the adjustment no problems. Shifts great, brakes well. Brought it into a shop for final once over. May help for others.
Cheers

This is the first folding bike we have had, and it was purchased for my teenager son about 1.5 months ago. Since I found that most other folding bikes have smaller wheels, we had concern about the 26" wheels this bike uses. It turned out to be a nicely designed and built product! We could easily fold it and put it in the trunk of my Acura TL sedan wherever we go. It is light weight, rides great, as steady as my non-folding bike because of the double suspension. My son loves it. I enjoy riding it so much that I want to get one for myself too. The costomer service was excellent. The seller always answered my inquiries extrememly politely, promptly, and professionally.
Highly recommend.

Yakima Tube Top Women's or Dual Suspension Bike Rack Frame Adapter Review

Yakima Tube Top Women's or Dual Suspension Bike Rack Frame Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this to work with a bike without a top tube that I currently have to mount "upside-down" and use the angled downtube to mount. However this put the bike up very high and blocks rear view. However, this adapater does not work well with very large (ie: long) frames. The problem is in the basic design that this adapter will almost "pull apart" and not stay very solid at full extension. It almost feels like it will snap apart when fully extended and loaded with the bike on the hitch. I can't use it with my bike, but it does work with my kids bikes which are much smaller. For my bike I have tried a friends Saris adapter that works much better for a large bike and I am looking into buying this instead.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Yakima Tube Top Women's or Dual Suspension Bike Rack Frame Adapter

Does your bike's top tube prevent you from mounting your bike properly on your rear hitch rack? Turn to the Yakima TubeTop adapter, which keeps your bike mounted solidly on single or dual mast mounts. The adapter installs directly on your bike, with one molded collar attaching to your bike stem and the other to the seat post. Once installed, the adapter's large diameter tubing and anti-rotation inserts will sit sturdily on your vehicle's hitch rack, letting you tote everything from women's frames to dual-suspension bikes.

Mongoose Tyax Sport Mountain Bike (26-Inch Wheels) Review

Mongoose Tyax Sport Mountain Bike (26-Inch Wheels)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this bike as after a short stint with a department store bike that even with a "full" suspension, does not hold a candle against the Tyax. Needless to say I needed something more reliable and actually listed in the Mongoose site (none of the department store's Mongoose bikes are listed). Ordered it at a LBS (amazon is great in shipping times but did not use it for this purchase) and got it within a week. As you can notice on the pictures, the bike simply looks beautiful. The welds on the frame are rock solid, adding to the sturdy feel of the bike. The suntour fork has a small travel adjustment and can be locked out for smoother rides, which imo is a huge plus. The disk brakes allow the bike to brake faster without messing with the rim and after several rides they still brake right on the spot. Took the Tyax for a ride in a local paved trail and the bike performed as expected from a bike in this price range: shifters kicked in smoothly, the saddle was not too unconfortable after long rides, brakes react right on time so on and so forth. However it wasn't until I took the bike off road that I truly appreciated this bike. Going uphill in a light trail (small loose rocks; not huge jagged rocks) seemed very effortless. The combination of the Kenda tires and the light frame made it very easy to climb. My previous department store bike had a "full" suspension, meaning that it has a frame shock absorber as well as a fork shock absorber. This made the bike heavy and at times annoying since it would bounce from the frame. The hardtail is a clear winner because it is a lighter, sturdier and just a cool looking bike. So if you're looking for something fun that will take some occasional punishment this is your bike.

We ordered this bike for my 10 year old daughter. The stickers on it weren't perfect. The spocket that the chain goes up and down on on the back wheel was broken in the first week with very little riding. We had thrown out the box. Amazon kindly sent us a new one and said we could disassemble the current bike and return it in that box. The shipping box on the new one was banged up and written on. The bike has a small scratch and imperfect decals. We aren't returning it again because it works and she likes the color. I was disappointed that it wasn't perfect. Next time, I'd perfer to buy from a store so it's easier to return. The price was good, but it's a little disappointing.

Mantis Ghost Men's 26- Inch Bike, Black/Bronze Review

Mantis Ghost Men's 26- Inch Bike, Black/Bronze
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nice bike- mine took about a week and a half from the time I ordered it to arrive. Assembly is easy, but adjusting the brakes and shifters can take some time. Once adjusted, it works very well- it shifts smoothly, and rides fairly easily. My complaints are these:
1) Comes with cheesy pedals- I replaced them with these (9/16" threads): http://www.amazon.com/Diamondback-Sound-Pedal-Black-Alloy/dp/B001C3GJ22/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1284868963&sr=8-1
2) Brake levers are plastic, and the pivot point is a rivet, not a bolt. They feel a bit flimsy, but work fine.
3) The seat height is a bit low. I'm fairly average-sized (5'8"), and I have to raise the seat to the absolute maximum to be comfortabe.
4) The front wheel is ever so slightly warped- doesn't really affect anything, really.
Overall, a good bike for the price.

I bought this bike from Sports Chalet 2 month ago. It is light and suspension is good, but stainless steel parts (brakes, spokes) on the bike started to rust after only one month. I've never seen anything like that even with cheap bike I had before. Today I had a spoke broken, and I can see that it's just rusted all the way through. Weight or hard riding was not a problem, I'm only 100 pounds and was riding on the roads. Will take it back to Sports Chalet and see what they will tell me.

Diamondback Response Mountain Bike (26-Inch Wheels) Review

Diamondback Response Mountain Bike (26-Inch Wheels)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm back to bicycling after almost 20 years. While going to college in the late 70's I worked in a Schwinn dealership. I bought the first mountain bike Schwinn offered, the High Sierra and A Superior 10 speed road bike. I put thousands of miles on these bikes. Index shifting was not available yet. At 62 I decided I needed to get healthy. I researched bikes and settled on the Diamondback Response Mountain Bike. I am very pleased. The Amazon sizing chart enabled me to get the perfect fit for my 5' 7", a small 16" frame. My only experience with index shifting was a used 1993 Cannondale Delta V700 mountain bike. The Diamondback Response shifts beautifully. The overall performance and quality of this bike is very good. In 3 weeks I have rode 77 miles in 7 hours and 47 minutes (a Topline Bike Computer BC 906 also purchased from Amazon) and I'm healthier already. I'm too old for gonzo but I love the Redding, CA River Trail System and this bike is perfect for this. I highly recommend this Diamondback Response and buying from Amazon.

Smith and Wesson Tactician 26-Inch Bicycle Review

Smith and Wesson Tactician 26-Inch Bicycle

I purchased this bike and wish I had a S&W handgun to put me out of my misery. 1st after putting the bike together I took it for a ride and the nuts and bolts that hold the handle bars together started to come lose. I tighten them down and took off again. after about 30 minutes of riding the same thing. After two days of riding I carried a allen key with me. Less than a week later the left peddle breaks off and of course I order another set from amazon and guess what? The dang things don't fit. Well I ordered another pair and as you might have guesses they don't fit. I will tell you that I ride in Afghanistan but the roads here and conditions are no different than the roads in the states. If I rode on dirt trails or even gravel I would dismiss this as my fault. I would not by this bike again or take on for free.

Mantis Raptor Women's 26- Inch Bike, White/Red Review

Mantis Raptor Women's 26- Inch Bike, White/Red

This bike was a monster to put together - the instructions were for another bike... added to which the fork of the bike was provided to us backwards which we had to pay a bomb to get corrected.
We spent more on servicing this bike in the first 4 days of receiving it than the cost of the bike.
Would not advise anyone to buy it - pain to put together, the seat hurts if you sit for more than 3 seconds and was not a good experience.
