Schwinn Men's Prelude Bicycle (BBWhite) Review

Schwinn Men's Prelude Bicycle (BBWhite)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all I consider myself a serious commuter rider. I ride 3000 miles a year, have for two years, on and off for 35 years. I've had Schwinns, Gitanes, and Motobecanes. I hit a pothole, ended up in the hospital and destroyed my 35 year old Motobecane a few weeks ago. My bike is my only means of transportation, so replacing it was a must. I'm not a weekend racer or casual rider. I'm 6'6", 240 pounds, and an engineer. I need my bike tough, fast, and with a really high high gear. I'm not interested in some overpriced bike to impress my weekend bike warrior friends. I don't run around in spandex. What I like: The balance is good, light as a feather, the padded tape handle bars are wonderful, the gearing is great, the shifters that actually go right to the desired gears are heavenly, the brake calipers do a great job of centering on the tires. I like the quick release front hub with self centering fork depressions. Quick release seat height is a plus. The paint looks durable. The handles hold a end of bar mirror nicely. The bike rides great and I rapidly got used to it's balance. Before I mention the negatives, I am pleased with the bike, it's a pleasure to ride and would definitely buy it again. I got it for $249 at a big box sporting goods store. What I don't like: I would love to be able to raise the handlebar stem a few inches, and have the frame larger for my size. I immediately replaced the skinny fits in your crack seat, with a wide memory foam one from Bell for my ample rear. I took off the peddle baskets, hate them things, which lost me two peddle reflectors. They have wrapped the brake lines under the handlebar tape and taped almost to the stem making it really tough to cludge solutions to mount the lights, reflectors, and speed computer. I made putty epoxy forms to get the computer to fit the handlebar center shaft. My Motobecane had brake handles that went both down the front and in toward the stem of the handlebars so you could brake in both hand positions. You have to be in the lower position to brake on the Prelude, loosing precious milliseconds in an emergency. I am at the upper limit of the seat post to fit me. The 700c 23mm 'tires' are weak for going across rough terrain, I go over 34 railroad tracks on the way to work. Blew both tires first week going too fast from pinch punctures. The rear wheel is a pain to remove and especially to reinstall. The rims are really solid, but they are that hollow extruded aluminum design. They put a chinsy rubber strip over the spoke holes and the tire pressure (100 PSI min) caused it to burst puncturing two inner tubes within a two weeks (while it sat in the Sun). I filled the depressions with hard high temperature red silicone rubber and taped over them with 3/4" fiberglass electrical tape. It seems to be holding well now. Schwinn should have done that in design. They are sending me a bike computer as an apology for my troubles, hey they listen, got to credit them for that. By the way Schwinn's 700c 25-32mm self sealing inner tubes are too long to fit in the tire, and fold up inside on inflation. The self sealing stuff doesn't work at this pressure just makes a mess. Schrader valve narrow 700c inner tubes are really hard to find, get a stock early, I'm going to Presta valves because it's all I can find in torn proof inner tubes. The cheap thin tubes are supposed to flex better and make you ride faster. My bike weights 26# I weigh 240, excuse me, all you need to do is get some muscle child and it won't slow you down. After all the tire flexes in and out, pushes in hard pushes out hard, so it's negligible unless you wear spandex and have to ride in packs. Bottom line it does what I need for a reasonable price. All of the problems have been simple fixes. Most of you are not my size and won't put the bike through what I do. I love the thing, plus it looks hot. I spend $300/year on bike repairs, I was spending $450/month to keep a car on the road. My cholesterol dived, my BP is great, and my sleep apnea is in remission since riding daily.

CygoLite TridenX 600 LED Li-Ion: Triple LED Bike Light with Stem-Mount Li-Ion Battery Review

CygoLite TridenX 600 LED Li-Ion: Triple LED Bike Light with Stem-Mount Li-Ion Battery
Average Reviews:

I bought this light after researching many other lights. I first saw it at Performance bikes and its light weight is what first caught my attention. Added to that, it gives off so much light my boyfriend thought I was a car pulling into the driveway when I got home from work on my bike. The battery is small and fits on the limited space my stem offers and it charges in only three and a half hours. I ride a cyclocross bike as a commuter and this light works excellent for what I need. My boyfriend is thinking of competing in a 24 hour race and this light would be perfect for that. It has four settings, the brightest is very bright and the weakest is still bright. You can clearly see potholes and junk in the road ahead of you at a good distance. Fast riding is safer with this light at night. Plus, if you want to be obnoxious, this little light has flash and strobe settings. Cars will definitely see you coming. Maybe even mistake you for a motorcycle. Overall, this light is worth the money and I'd buy it over any of NiteRiders lights, of which I also looked at the bike shop.

Designed specifically for long races and competitive night riding, the CygoLite TridenX Li-Ion bike light will illuminate the path ahead for hours at a stretch. In addition, the light's three high-brightness LEDs offer an output of 600 lumens, ensuring HID-level brilliance as you ride down city streets or country roads. No more illuminating just a few narrow feet in front of you, or squinting to make out objects in the darkness. And riders will love the light's Cross-Fire technology, which offers highly focused optical lenses to expand your field of vision. Other details include four brightness settings (high, medium high, medium low, and low); four special flashing modes (fast, slow, walking, and SOS); a three-stage battery level indicator; a helmet mount; and a heavy-duty flip-lock handlebar bracket that fits both oversized and standard-sized handlebars.

Schwinn Crest Urban Women's Hybrid Bike (700c Wheels) Review

Schwinn Crest Urban Women's Hybrid Bike (700c Wheels)
Average Reviews:

This bike is a perfect combination of features:
-substantial wheels stand up to cracks and dips in the road
-adjustable handlebars allow for a more or less upright riding position (I love to cruise with a tall straight spine... hate hunching my back on other bikes)
-shocks on the front wheel and under the seat make for a smooth ride despite potholes
-wide comfortable seat doesn't dig in to the wrong "parts"; instead, there's some nice padding under the sit bones
-plastic guard protects pants from getting caught in the chains
I've been riding my new bike to work every day through the city, where I encounter all sorts of conditions; the bike gets me through them all pretty comfortably. Pedaling up hills has never been easier and I don't even have to stand. The brakes are responsive and smooth. This is a hardcore comfort bike.

i bought this bike because i wanted to try out the larger 29 inch wheels without spending a fortune. the price was right. out of the box the bike requires a bit of assembly but it's not too bad. i was really surprised at the high quality of the frame. the frame drop outs look like belonged on a bike costing a lot more. the components are okay, i'll probably upgrade the fork. the ride is what impressed me most. i can see how the larger wheels help you go over bumps and rocks easier. i'm really happy with this bike and will probably upgrade components as needed. highly recommended for the price.

Nice Bike!!
A;I am 50yrs old and have had many bikes.I love to ride, but I am not some spandex wearing hard core. I have shopped around(alot)and just got this bike today.5/31/11. Assembly was easy but you are going to need some tools.Mostly allen wrenches.(metric)You are going to want to tweak it for your needs anyways. It is way cooler looking than the photo. The top and lower bars are angular metal and look tough. It is a nice ride!Glides down the road.I am 5'9" and it is a nice fit.I could see anyone from 5'5"to 6'5" being able to tweak this to their needs.I had never seen this bike except for this one photo online.I took a leap of faith and bought it.I would do it again tomorrow. It looks more like a 4-$500 bike.My neighbor who rides $1200 Cannondale was quite impressed. This is not a trail bike! But a road bike that will handle any dirt road or 2 track.Great deal for the money! And VERY cool looking!

Men's Forge Sawback 5xx Mountain Dirt Bike - Charcoal (19") Review

Men's Forge Sawback 5xx Mountain Dirt Bike - Charcoal (19)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start out by saying that this is my first review for any of the many purchases I have made through Amazon.com. I never write reviews, but for this purchase, I felt the need to spread my story.
I will list my opinions, observations and experiences with each major part of the bike. As for me, I just started trail riding, but have been working with bicycles my entire life. I used to be a hardcore BMX freestyle rider, and I always put the quality of a bike and its components, comfort, and dependability before anything else. (Safety is important as well, but IMO, if it meets those three, it will be safe :) )
Frame: Appearance wise, it looks really good. It is definitely a different color than most bikes on and off the road. Almost like a light navy gray. The paint has held up pretty good so far, although I am extremely rough on this bike. Its already got a few scratches and dings, but no chipping or anything horrible. The welds are perfect, and I mean perfect. I have seen many bikes in this price range, and no welds have looked this good. The frame is very rigid, it doesn't have any give when jumping a curb or random log. It has drilled and tapped holes for two water bottle mounts, and for a rear rack. Overall, I give the frame 9/10. Minus one point not having more size options, even though it's perfect for me (5'11").
Tires: The tires are great for off-road/trail use. They will work on pavement, but you will quickly notice a really loud roar. I have already gotten one flat tube, from a really tiny thorn. I wouldn't expect these to handle a whole bunch of abuse, but for the average trail and road rider, they are fine. The tread is about half way gone, but I have put about 500 miles, on and off road. I give the tires 6/10. Better than a Wal-Mart tire, but not the best.
Rims: Awesomeness. Very, very tough. I have given these rims hell, and they keep on spinning. Light and just the right amount of give. WTB rims are some of my favorites. 9/10. Hubs are on the smaller side, but so far, super awesome.
Brakes: Super awesomeness! The brakes work amazingly well, wet or dry, dusty or clean. No noise, until about a week ago. My front disk is starting to make some vibration noise, but I haven't looked into it yet. Might be time to tighten it up. I bought a $250 bike from Wal-Mart.com that had disk brakes, and Lord... they were soooooo annoying! A loud screech at every stop. These are pretty great for the money. 8/10. Super strong.
Drivetrain: Gears. Gears. Gears. Times nine, equals, 27! Math is fun... Gears are fun... This bike can climb some STEEP hills... With no effort... Sitting down. No slips, no grinds, came perfectly tuned, and I almost couldn't stop riding. The Shifters work great, but there are no numbers on the display. Just an arrow and some lines. They work well though. Buttery. Like a burnt piece of toast with ice cream and butter on top. Or, like a finely tuned bicycle. 9/10. Keep it oiled...
OVERALL: "This bike feels really tight, well-made." My sister.
"Nice wheels!" Some guy in a park.
And I couldn't find better words. This is a great bicycle, and is overly well worth the money. Price some of it's components online and in local shops, and your mouth will look like this...... O ....... round-mouth, lol. Seat and grips are okay, but what the crap, it's a seat and grips. Overall, I get great satisfaction every time I ride this bicycle. I think you will, too.
LOCK IT UP WITH BIG CHAINS AND U-LOCKS!!!! PEOPLE CUT CABLES WITH ONE HAND, WHILE WAVING AT THE POLICE!!!!!!!!

Diamondback Overdrive Pro 29'er Mountain Bike (2011 Model, 29-Inch Wheels) Review

Diamondback Overdrive Pro 29'er Mountain Bike (2011 Model, 29-Inch Wheels)
Average Reviews:

Bought for $825 with free shipping. Good value b/c I did not want to spend a ton of money just to try out the 29'er thing. Glad I paid what I did because this bike is not worth more than that. Good news is that I am glad that I did b/c I love 29ers. The Reba on this bike is the best I have used. It is one of the reasons I purchased the bike. But after 3 months of weekend use I have four problems with te bike. First, the seatpost will not stay up. I even acssembled a worm drive hose clamp under the original clamp for backup. It helped a lot but the seatpost still moves. I think the issue is that the seatpost tube is too large and there is a sloppy fit. Second issue is that the spokes are coming loose. I have many loose spokes on the rear wheel. In the 4 bikes and 11 years of mountain biking i have never seen such a poorly built wheel. The Thudbuster LT takes out a lot of impact on the wheel Third issue is that the rear hub is loose. I thought it was the bearings so I adjusted so there was hardly any clearance left. But the rear wheel still moves side to side after it is installed. Forth issue is that the bearings in the rear wheel are very loud. This makes me concerned that the bearing will self destruct. My plan is to use the factory wheels as a backup and install bike path tires on them. They are up to offroad duty.

My son got it for his 7th birthday (he's fairly tall for 7) and he loves them!
They seem to be sturdy and fairly good quality.
I occasionally take a ride as well (5'10" 170 lbs) with no problem.
Size seems like it should feet a very small 6-7 years old all the way through 10-12.
Fairly light, good brakes and transmission (both Shimano).
Easy to assemble with included tools.

This is a very nice bike, packed nicely, was put together easily, I wouldn't have known how to adjust the brakes, no directions, but my hubby did :). It's great quality, but no kickstand so I'll have to buy one. My 8 year old loves the color its a pearly-pink, she is 4'5" with a 24" inseam and this bike is great for her, the 24" bike would have overwhelmed her because biking has been a challenge to her and she just learned to ride with no training wheels, but the seat is raised about what it shows in the picture(more then halfway up the bar) it can still be raised up a bit but you may opt for the Octane 24" if your child is close to this size or any bigger(go by inseam). I'm hoping she gets a couple years out of it, but I plan to pass it down to my 4 year old when she's about 6, so its a great buy for me in the longrun anyway. Its a dream compared to the cheap toy store bike she learned on, the old bike was heavy and awkward and by the time she was comfortable handling it she was way too big for it, I wish I had bought her a quality bike to begin with and maybe she would have learned easier, I'm very pleased I bought this bike enstead of going back to the toystore for a cheap one. The alluminum frame makes it lightweight and easy to handle.

Schwinn Rocket Adult Dual-Suspension Mountain Bike Review

Schwinn Rocket Adult Dual-Suspension Mountain Bike
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At last I have come through the gauntlet of mountain bike buying, much scarred, but also much wiser!
I will try to briefly explain why I consider the Schwinn Rocket is a victory for me, and hopefully save other people much grief in choosing a "good" bike.
My experience in mountain bikes goes back to the early days of mountain bikes, but is based more realistically in the biking needs of four growing boys, and their middle aged parents. Like most I have largely purchased off-the-shelf box store bikes. Like most I have had more negative than positive experiences. I attempted over the years to upgrade to better bikes from the box store, but with little real world improvement. I have used bikes on the higher end, but cannot hope to buy such bikes for six people. What I wanted was a bike that would cost no more than twice what the box store offered. For this money I wanted a bike that offered at least twice the quality and reliability as well. What I found was the Schwinn Rocket! Here is a comparison with "better quality" box store bikes and the Schwinn Rocket: WHEELS: Please, go with alloy! Steel wheels are heavy and rust practically over night. Some box store bikes have alloy wheels. Schwinn wins here with double wall rims. This is very important since it is very easy to bend rims on the trail or even on a rough road commute. FRAME: Aluminum is a must! I have box store bikes with aluminum frames, and they are worth it for their lite weight. Schwinn wins again! The quality is immediately apparent coming right out of the box. Paint is very nice for the price category and someone obviously cared to take the time to put the stickers on neatly (not to mention it isn't overloaded with useless gaudy stickers). The Iso Drive frame is definitely superior to other suspensions I have tried. Importantly there is no bobbing over ripple surfaces. Four inches of suspension travel doesn't hurt a bit either! GEARS: Everyone is putting Shimano stickers on their bikes these days. CAUTION! Base grade Shimano derailleurs are better than anything else the box store offers, but they often combine them with lame shifting systems. The Rocket uses better grade Shimano components and their click shifter has put the joy back into riding again. It operates smoothly and is precise, no guessing about what gear you stumbled into, or the subsequent noises that come from gears that have not shifted properly or are in need of constant adjustment. A VERY NICE shift/gear system alone makes this bike a winner for the price. BRAKES: I hadn't given much thought about brakes as they have seldom been a problem for me. When I started using the Shimano breaks on the Rocket that all changed! I had previously considered disc brakes, but now I say, "Who needs them!?" Well, actually they would be an improvement in adverse weather conditions, but for most of us the Shimano self-aligning breaks will more than meet the need. SEAT: While the Rocket's seat still leaves a lot to be desired, it is an obvious improvement over most seats on the box store bikes. I purchased a Lycra Gel Seat by Ergo and couldn't be happier! So, we have: Nice quality, descent engineering, attention to detail. This bike will make a fine recreational, commuter and light/medium trail bike. All in all the Rocket is not for the serious off-road racing aficionado, but for the average person looking for the most bang out of their hard-earned buck the Rocket is the way to go!

Schwinn Rocket Comp Adult Dual-Suspension Mountain Bike
Just got it, don't have it all built yet, but first impressions....
I think the one I received is a 2005 model. The product description says 9 speed rear (Freewheel: SRAM PG-950 9-speed, 11-32t), mine came with 8 cog setup. Rear shock is a Fox Vanilla, not Radium.
Paint on front dropout was rubbed off in shipping, other than that arrived PERFECT.
So 4 stars. Will update when built & ridden.

Amazon.com Bicycle Buying Guide Finding the Right Bike To really enjoy cycling, it's important to find a bicycle that works for you. Here are some things to keep in mind when you're in the market for a new bike:
The Right Ride In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories:
Road and Racing Bikes--As a general rule, road and racing are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels, and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain.
Mountain Bikes--With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing, and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike--even one that you use regularly on trails--adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine.
Comfort/Cruiser Bikes--For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.

The Right Price A bike's price boils down to three essentials: frame materials, bike weight, and component quality and durability.
Entry-level--You'll find a wide range of comfort and cruiser bikes in this category, as well as some lower-end mountain bikes and road bikes. Most will have steel frames and components that are designed to last for several years with frequent use.
Mid-range--Bikes in this range may feature a lighter aluminum frame with mid-range components that keep performing after miles of use. If you're looking for a quality bike that is relatively lightweight and will stand up to abuse, this is the "sweet spot." Most serious commuter and touring bikes fall into this category, as do mid-range mountain bikes with a decent front suspension.
High-end--Racers and serious enthusiasts who expect lightweight, high-performance components will want to stick to this category. For road bikes, exotic frame materials (carbon fiber, titanium) and ultralightweight components can add thousands to the price tag. Mountain bikes in this class often feature advanced front and rear suspension technology, as well as components designed to handle lots of rugged trail action.

The Right Size Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:
Stand-over Height--To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.
Top Tube Length--You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half, and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike's posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit.
Bikes for Women--Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women's bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.

The Right Accessories When you make a bike purchase, don't forget these crucial add-ons:
Helmet (this is a must!)
Seat pack
Lock
Hydration pack, or water bottle and bottle cage
Spare tubes
Portable bike pump
Gloves

Smith & Wesson Custom Police Mountain Bike Review

Smith and Wesson Custom Police Mountain Bike
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the first bike I've had in about 12 years. After getting over the sticker shock of "adult bikes" I spent weeks researching the many options. It immediately became clear that no matter what bike I got, I'd still probably end up spending hundreds more to customize it with the components I wanted. That is, until I found this one on Amazon for a really great price with free shipping.
THE GOOD:
The components on this bike alone (Sram shifters/derailers, Avid disc brakes) are all top of the line and could easily add up to what I paid if purchased separately. The two water bottles and rear rack are a nice touch. The adjustable front suspension makes for a comfortable ride. If you are a hardcore mountain biker this bike probably isn't for you - but you already knew that. These are the same bikes used by many police forces so I am fairly confident it will hold up to the minimal punishment that I deliver.
THE BAD:
1. The assembly instructions are lousey. They are too generic and look like could be for a different bike. They seem to assume that you already know what all of the parts are and how they work. It took me longer than expected to assemble, but it wasn't too bad. The company does provide a technical support number and, to their credit, the folks there were very helpful. One of my shifters was broken in shipping so they sent me a new one right away, no questions asked.
2. My only other complaint is about the kick stand. It is a piece of junk. There are two bolts that go through a plate and just clamp it on to the frame tubing. Square plate clamped on to rounded tubing = bad idea. I have found myself tightening it up about ten times now because it starts to slip and eventually gets to an angle that can't hold the bike up properly. Seriousl, I think the manufacturer could have come up with a better design here.
Overall I think this bike is a great value. It's got everything I need and is built with (mostly) quality components. I did end up buying a bunch of accessories after the fact but nothing I wouldn't have had to get for any bike (air pump, patch kit, etc). I look forward to enjoying it when the weather gets nicer.

Schwinn Solution FS AL Men's Mountain Bike (26-Inch Wheels) Review

If you wanna go tearing down the mountain full throttle DO NOT BUY this bike! but if you're looking for a really good cruisin' bike and maybe you wanna hit some soft trails, ride down 5 or 6 concrete stairs, then this is the perfect bike for you....It goes together pretty easy but expect to adjust the brakes before going for a ride which really is no big deal...you did buy it online after all so some assembly is to be expected. The one thing you should know is BUY some aftermarket pedals for this bike, the one's that come with the bike SUCK!! 15 minutes into my first ride the left one started to click and I didn't like that at all..The brakes that come with this bike aren't bad at all, they are shimano's basic brake but they get the job done. I really like the quick release tires and the front suspension(not to much travel in them) and I was really suprised I didn't have to adjust the deraillers. on my first ride I jumped some curbs and went down 6 or 7 stairs and there were no problems with the chain or the shifting(very smooth)...the bike itself is light,my 8 yr old nephew picked it up easily enough. I'm 5' 9" and 190 and the 18 in. frame fit me quite well just to give you a referance...If I want to go like a bat out of hell down the mountain I'll use my 01 Motiv..everything else my new Solution should handle quite well....I'll update this review in a couple hundred miles...

This is my first 29er. I have riding a 26 full suspension for 3 years. After a bad crash and practically totaling out old bike, I decided to get a new one. Strapped for cash, I looked for a bargain. I came upon the Overdrive and have been toying with getting a 29er. Needless to say, I love the bike. Strong and sturdy for a 230lb guy like me.

Tree roots, rocks, bumps - whatever is ahead in the trail, the big wheels of the Diamondback Overdrive will keep on rolling. The 29'er butted aluminum frame is paired with an SR Suntour XCT MLO 100mm travel fork complete with mechanical lock out.24 gears controlled by SRAM X-4 shifters and rear derailleur allow you a multitude of gears to choose from and the double wall rims will be sure to keep you going down the trail. When it is time to stop rely on the Tektro Novela mechanical disc brakes.Granted, the Overdrive will not do all the work for you, but it will sure make your job easier.
